Please note

This is an intensive course. You need to be able to commit to attending EVERY day for two weeks.

To be accepted onto the course, your initial assessments need to show that you are working at Level 1 or Level 2.

The focus of the English Summer School is to develop the language skills of people who speak English as their first/home language. If English is not your first language, please refer to our ESOL courses.

The courses are free to UK and EU residents. You will only have to pay a £20 resource fee.

Entry requirements

You do not need any qualifications to start this course; however you must be 19 or over, a UK/EEA citizen and have a minimum Level 1 ability in spoken English. You will be asked to attend a short informal interview and undertake a free assessment before your course starts to help determine your existing skill level.

Course Content

During the course you will cover topics including: 

  • Reading
  • Punctuation
  • Comprehension
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • 'Sounds-Write' - Phonics for Adult Learners.

The phonics programme Sounds-Write is incorporated into Entry level classes to help learners improve their basic literacy skills. Research has shown that synthetic phonics is the most effective way to teach reading. It is an effective tool to use with adult learners who struggle with reading and spelling.

Assessment Methods

Depending upon the level at which you study, you will be entered for a City & Guilds Functional Skills qualification, available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.

Further study and career options

This course leads to a nationally-recognised qualification which may help you to gain employment or access further learning programmes.

You must be able to commit to attending ever day of the two-week course, between 10.00am-1.00pm. You will need to pay a £20 resources fee to enrol on the course.
