Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy CPD) in the Lifelong Learning Sector Level 5 University Certificate

This is a 45 credit ‘in-service’ University CPD Certificate. It is ideal for teachers who already have Level 2/GCSE Maths, Level 3 Maths and even a degree in a Maths related subject. This course will provide specialist Maths professional teacher training for teachers who teach Maths up to Level 3 in the Skills for Life area of post-compulsory education. The programme is recognised by the Department for Education and Skills and incorporates the 2014 Education and Training (ETF) teacher teaching standards. It is recommended for teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE Maths. The course allows a teacher to become a Maths Subject Specialist. Although applicants should be aware that all teachers of Maths are required to gain a full initial teaching qualification (CertEd/PGCE) in addition.

This standalone University Certificate in Skills for Life (SfL) is worth 45 H.E credits at Level 5. Although a standalone qualification the credit can be used towards a degree at a University. This course is a requirement for those Maths/Numeracy teachers wishing to gain QTLS as a Skills for Life (SfL) specialist.

Entry requirements

Applicants for this Certificate must be engaged in teaching in post-compulsory (further, adult or workplace) education for at least 50 hours per year. You will need to have A Level Maths or equivalent Level 3 Maths qualifications (or be able to prove Level 3 Maths competency). There will be a pre course assessment which demonstrates Numeracy Skills at Level 3. Your personal skills in your subject specialism (Numeracy) should be already at Level 3 or above. At interview you will need to demonstrate personal skills appropriate for a member of the teaching profession.

Course content

This is a one year part-time course and weekly attendance is required.

During this course you will study a range of topics, including:

  • Using understanding drawn from educational theory to conceptualise the process of developing a command of numeracy/maths
  • Recognising barriers to numeracy/maths learning and developing strategies to overcome them
  • Developing and evaluating a range of teaching methods and approaches and associated materials
  • Developing your own numeracy/maths skills to standards required in subject specifications at NQF Level
  • Demonstrating threshold standards of quality and consistency of practice
  • Identifying areas of your practice which can be improved, researching through literature and consulting with tutors, mentors and colleagues as a means to improve those areas
  • Enhancing your teaching through constructive use of reflection and feedback from students, colleagues, tutors and mentors.

You will be able to:

  • Understand fundamental attributes of mathematics and numeracy
  • Understand the attributes of procedures within mathematics and numeracy
  • Understand how learning theories and the origins and status of mathematics impact on numeracy teaching
  • Be able to use evaluation of practice to improve numeracy learning and teaching
  • Understand the links between popular perceptions of mathematics and their roles within numeracy learning
  • Understand how numeracy can impact on different contexts and subjects
  • Be able to use assessment processes to identify the skills and aspirations of numeracy learners
  • Be able to use inclusive approaches to meet the individual needs of numeracy learners
  • Be able to promote learning support and learner support within numeracy learning and teaching
  • Understand how to liaise with others to promote the inclusion of numeracy and wider skills in learning programmes

This standalone University Certificate in Skills for Life (SfL) is worth 45 H.E credits at Level 5. Although a standalone qualification the credit can be used towards a degree at a University. This course is a requirement for those Maths/Numeracy teachers wishing to gain QTLS as a Skills for Life (SfL) specialist.

Assessment methods

This course will be assessed via:

  • Case Study (2,000 words)
  • Report – Mathematical Skills and Knowledge (3,000 words)
  • Teaching File (Including Observation of Teaching)
  • Reflective Evaluation (2,000 words)

Most of the taught sessions will be used for discussions and group exercises which students will need to supplement with independent study. Assessment on the course is via a system of credits. Credits are awarded when students can demonstrate through a portfolio of work, assignment or presentation that they have met the Learning Outcomes of the modules. Some Learning Outcomes are related to practical skills, others to knowledge gained. When students have gained credits for all the modules, they receive the overall award. All assessments are subject to moderation by the University and also by an external moderator.

  • Be able to create and maintain a supportive and challenging numeracy learning environment
  • Be able to use communication strategies and techniques within numeracy learning
  • Understand how technology can be used in numeracy learning and teaching
  • Be able to assess learners’ numeracy knowledge, understanding and skills in accordance with organisational processes.

Successful applicants will become a student at both Bedford College and the University of Bedfordshire and will therefore have access to both sets of facilities and amenities within each institution.
