Assessing Vocational Achievement Edexcel Level 3 Certificate (TAQA)

These City and Guilds TAQA qualifications are for those who assess vocational programmes. There are three different awards and a certificate and replace the A1 Assessor Award. The units can be undertaken separately or in combination and can be added to later to make different qualifications. The qualifications are for those who assess any vocational qualifications, either in the workplace or in classrooms/workshops or intend to. They apply to any vocational assessing, not only NVQs. The courses have a flexible start date and are run on a one-to one basis.

Entry requirements

They will need to be qualified/experienced in a vocational area and meet the requirements for assessment as specified by the assessment strategy of their vocational area qualification. This is usually a level 3 qualification and relevant experience. For unit 302 they must be able to assess two candidates on two occasions each in a work environment against vocational standards/criteria approved by the organisation. They must use observation, examination of work products and questioning as a minimum. For unit 303 they must be able to assess two candidates on two occasions each against vocational standards/criteria approved by the organisation. They must use a minimum of three assessment methods. This will be in a non-work environment.

Course content

During the course you will study the following topics:

  • Planning assessments,
  • Making assessment decisions,
  • Providing information about assessment
  • Maintaining legal and good practice requirements when assessing competence
  • Unit 301: Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
  • Unit 302: Assessing occupational competence in the work environment
  • Unit 303: Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.

If you choose to study unit 302 or 303 you will need to be a position to collect evidence of these activities, either in paid or voluntary work as an assessor. The units can be added to later if you develop your role.

Assessment methods

Assessment will be by written work, professional discussion, observation of carrying out assessment, witness testimony self reflection and work products.

Further study and career options

It may be possible to progress onto the quality assurance qualifications.
