Public Services Introductory (Level 1)

The public sector is the UK’s largest employer, and this Public Services NCFE Level 1 Diploma will provide you with an insight into the range of work undertaken by the public services, as well as the different career opportunities that exist within the sector. During this course you will develop a range of skills to help you in your future career, such as leadership abilities, team working skills and physical fitness. You will gain valuable insight from current and former public services employees, as teaching staff have served as members of Armed Forces or emergency services. You will also have the opportunity to meet working members of the public services.

Entry requirements

There are no previous qualifications required to begin this course, but you will need to sit an initial assessment, attend a presentation and attend an interview before enrolling onto the course.

Course content

The course will focus on developing your communication and interpersonal skills, along with team work and fitness, so you can move on to a higher level qualification in the uniformed public services.

As part of this course you will study the following topics:

  • Investigating employment opportunities in the Uniformed Services
  • Well-being and physical fitness
  • Teamwork skills
  • Developing self-discipline
  • Map reading and navigation
  • Health, Safety and emergency care
  • Adventurous activities

During the course you will also study to achieve the following additional qualifications:

  • Emergency First Aid
  • Functional Skills Maths and English

You will also have the opportunity to take part in a range of trips and visits, including army days, multi-day expeditions, teambuilding events, and visits to local public services. There will also be the chance to join in with other departments on trips to Egypt and Spain.

Assessment methods

During this course you will be assessed via a variety of methods, including practical assessments, presentations, posters, written reports and workbooks.

Entry to the Uniformed Services NCFE Level 1 Diploma

  • Personal development skills
  • Study skills
  • Employability skills

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course you could progress on to the Uniformed Public Services BTEC Level 2 Diploma.

Additional information

To take part in this course you will be required to pay a fee of approximately £45 for required clothing. Any trips/visits will be paid for nearer the time.

Funding information

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses are still free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
