Production Arts (Theatrical Make-up) (Level 3)

This study programme will provide you with the basic skills and knowledge you will need to apply makeup effects for the performing arts, and is an ideal starting point if you are intending to pursue a career as a makeup artist. This is a practical-based programme, with some theoretical elements. You will be able to undertake assessments on Performing Arts students, as well as practicing on peers in your group.


Entry requirements

To begin this study programme you will need... 

Duration: 2 years 
  • 4 GCSEs grades 9–4 ideally including English & maths OR 
  • Performing & Production Arts at Level 2 AND 
  • Entry will also be subject to producing a portfolio of  make-up designs and examples of application, to be presented at interview.

Course content

This study programme will focus on creating special effects makeup and hair for the world stage and screen.

  • Subject units:
    • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety practice
    • Applying airbrush makeup to the face
    • Fashion and photographic makeup
    • Media makeup
    • Applying prosthetic pieces
    • Fantasy hair design for performers
    • Creating and casting small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • English and maths:
    If you don't already have GCSE English and maths grade A*-C, we will work with you to help you develop your maths and English skills. 
  • Work experience:
    You will have the opportunity to carry out work experience within other departments, such as Performing Arts and Media.
  • Personal development skills, study skills and employability skills 
  • Additional vocational learning and qualifications: 
    • You may also have the chance to go on visits to hair and beauty trade shows, as well as shows in the West End. 

Assessment methods

Theoretical knowledge for each unit will be assessed via portfolios, log books and written evaluations, which will test your underpinning knowledge. Practical knowledge will be assessed via ‘hands-on’ assignments on your peers and Performing Arts students. Written assignments and research is also required for each unit.

You can also gain up to 168 UCAS points. 

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this study programme you could progress on to a university course in a related subject, or pursue a career as a makeup artist. Alternatively you can continue on to degree-level study here at Bedford College with a Specialist Make-Up Higher National Diploma (HND). 

Additional information

To take part in this study programme there will be an additional fee of £350 for personal equipment and materials and £100 for trips/visits.

Funding information

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses are still free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification. If you’re over 23 or studying a second Level 3 qualification, you will need to pay a fee. Find out more on our financial support page at
