Horticulture Apprenticeship Level 2

Horticulture Level 2 Apprenticeship at Bedford College

This apprenticeship will ensure that you develop the skills and knowledge required by employers in the horticulture industry. It is ideal if you already have some knowledge and basic skills or a keen interest in horticulture and want to progress in this industry. The course will allow you to choose a pathway that suits your skills and job role, including: Horticulture; Parks, Gardens and Green Space; Landscaping; or Sports Turf - Groundsman. There will also be the opportunity to study for additional professional qualifications, such as safe use of pesticides, hedge trimmers and powered cultivators.

Entry requirements

Grade requirements: You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at grades A*-D, ideally including English and maths or a Level 1 equivalent.

Course content

During this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics, which could include:

  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety
  • Maintaining and developing personal performance
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others
  • Clearing horticultural and landscaping sites
  • Maintain moisture levels for crops or plants
  • Provide nutrients to crops or plants

Other units will vary depending on which pathway you choose to follow.

Assessment methods

The majority of assessment will take place in the work place through a mixture of practical observation and questions, learner discussion, written questions and the production of a portfolio of evidence. There is also a short multiple choice test marked externally.


You will gain the following qualifications:

Work-Based Horticulture City & Guilds/NPTC Level 2 Diploma


  • Emergency First Aid at Work Level 2 Award
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Functional Skills in English and maths.

You will also have the opportunity to take additional qualifications including Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1), Cylinder and Rotary Operated Pedestrian Mowers, Chainsaw and Related Operations, Safe Use of Hedge Trimmers and more.

Further study and career options

Further study: Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to progress on to the Advanced Level 3 apprenticeship in Horticulture. You could also choose to study a further education courses full-time, such as the Level 3 BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma in Horticulture or Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

Future careers: This qualification could help you find work in roles such as agricultural/horticultural technician, garden designer, gardener, groundsperson, horticultural garden centre worker or landscaper.

Next steps

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must either be employed on a full-time contract by an employer willing to support your training or have an offer of employment as an apprentice. Bedford College can help you find a job role with an employer if you don’t already have one.
