Hairdressing (Commercial Focus: Salon Services) Level 2 (Internal students only)

This course will allow you to develop and progress your hairdressing skills over the period of one academic year. This is a physically demanding, practical, artistic, fashion-oriented course that combines the essential requirements of chemistry and anatomical, theoretical science. All aspects of hairdressing, both practical and theoretical, will be covered. You will receive professional, skilled training from experienced hair staff who have covered numerous areas of industry-led employment. All practical training is carried out in brand new, state of the art premises, allowing for a current, exciting and enjoyable learning experience.

Entry requirements

In order to begin this course you must be an internal student and will have completed the VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing, as well as Functional Skills in English and Maths (may be GCSEs according to your previous attainment) within the correct allocated time. You will also need to have a achieved a minimum of two GCSEs grade C or above, including maths and English, or an equivalent-level qualification. Entry will also be subject to a successful interview with the course team. You will also need to demonstrate an enhanced and motivated interest in hairdressing, and be able to address clients and colleagues in a professional manner. Your personal presentation will also need to be of a high standard.

Course content

During this course you will study to achieve the following qualifications: NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 1/2 Functional Skills in English, Level 1/2 Functional Skills in Maths.

The course will also cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Health and Safety
  • Client Consultation
  • Teamwork
  • Positive Impressions
  • Shampooing and Conditioning
  • Changing Hair Colour
  • Styling and Finishing Hair
  • Setting and Dressing Hair
  • Cutting Hair using Basic Techniques
  • Plaiting and Twisting Hair.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the Salon International exhibition in October of each year, and take part in the Brooks Hair and Beauty Show in May of each year.

Assessment methods

You will be continually assessed in your newly-acquired practical skills within the realistic working salon environments, as well as using the work-based assessor within your salon placement. All theoretical knowledge is delivered within a classroom setting, developing and learning bite-size learning sections, with assessments to be carried out via internal online multiple choice tests. Results of these tests are immediate, so feedback can be given instantly on their completion.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course you could progress onto further study to achieve a variety of qualifications or you could also pursue employment as a salon hairstylist.

Additional information

To participate in this course you will be required to pay additional costs. You will need to pay £90 for personal equipment and £37.50 for trips/visits.

Funding information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.
