Flexible careers from Hair & Beauty at Bedford College

It's officially spring! And with the warmer weather comes the start of the wedding season, thinking about summer holidays and lots of other lovely things to look forward to.

Hair and Beauty 2017 Show Must See NOW

Whether you want to look your best for a special occasion or just want to have a little ‘me’ time, our talented Hair & Beauty students offer a range of hairdressing and beauty services at BROOKS Hair & Beauty Salon on Bedford High Street. Open to the public, they have the opportunity to work with real clients every day to help develop their skills. Level 2 Beauty Therapy student Natasha, who would one day love to own her own spa, says: “My favourite beauty treatment that I like to give is a facial; it’s so relaxing and makes you feel better about yourself.”

The hair and beauty industry can offer a very flexible career. Students can join us for full-time, part-time or apprenticeship courses and progress on to working for a salon or spa, perhaps later working for themselves, as tutor Melissa Peacock explains: “It is a booming business world-wide and locally as hair and beauty treatments are something which women never give up, and, young men are increasingly aware of the benefits of making the most of themselves.”

harry Potter beauty and hair showIn the last few years students have won the Pantene Pro-V Awards and the Hairdressing Council’s Student of the Year award an impressive four times. Part-time Make-Up student Veronika Holomanova was runner-up in the finals of the national Jane Iredale Make-up competition at The Savoy Hotel, London in 2015, ahead of 200 colleges that entered. Students don’t only learn from some of the very best tutors, they also have opportunities to learn from experts at big brands such as Dermalogica, Clinique, Clarins, Lancome and Benefit.

The department has also produced some impressive barbers. Former student Damien Diablo, was chosen out of all the barbers in the UK to feature in ‘Modern Barber’ magazine and now as a host of sponsors to his name.

Another, Zak Resinato, is a trained barber, entrepreneur and owner of Jagged Edge Barbers. With a number of barbering shops and a training academy, Zak has even secured a deal with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s to open barbering ‘pods’ at their sites in the local area. As part of the Jagged Edge Academy, Zak has also worked with Bedford College to launch a full-time barbering course.

Long Dress Show Beauty Hair

All of our students get the opportunity to participate in our annual ‘Hair & Beauty Show’ every summer at the Bedford Corn Exchange. Last year’s theme was Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. From bin bag dresses to old newspaper headdresses, birds and bees accessories to garden crowns, the range of talent showed students to be men and women for all seasons. Alongside the glamour was the Jagged Edge ‘crew collection’ of barbering cuts and stylish male make-overs.

Students also take their manicures and other ‘mini treatments’ out and about offering a limited number for free at special events such as the Bedford Blues Rugby Charity Day, a Christmas Shopping event hosted by Mercedes Benz in Bedford and most recently for Apprenticeships Week 2017.

Whatever your aspirations in the world of Hair & Beauty, or beyond, “Start with a vision, whatever it may be and do what it takes to get where you want to end up! Always believe in yourself no matter what, otherwise others never will!” (Zak Resinato, Jagged Edge Barbers).
