Beauty Therapy Introductory (Level 1)

This customer-focused professional course will equip you with the skills needed to begin a career in beauty therapy.

Entry requirements

To start this course you will need to have a genuine interest in the beauty therapy industry and a desire to follow a career in the industry. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification would be an advantage.

Course content

During the course you will study topics including manicures, facials and make-up at our professional High Street salon. The course also includes an aspect of hairdressing including shampoo and conditioning hair, blow drying and plaiting hair giving you experiences in both aspects of the industry. You will also study GCSEs or Functional Skills in Maths and English.

Units studied during the course will include:

  • Ensuring responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Contributing to the development to effective working relationships
  • Preparing and maintaining salon treatment work areas
  • Assisting with facial skincare treatments
  • Assisting with nail services
  • Assisting with day make-up
  • Assisting with salon reception duties
  • Preparing for hair services and maintaining work areas
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Blow drying hair
  • Plaiting and twisting hair.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in BROOKS’ annual Hair & Beauty Show, skin care product training, and enrichment workshops. You will also have the opportunity to visit to New York for a skin care and make-up seminar.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed by the beauty therapy tutors as you carry out treatments on clients in BROOKS, Bedford College’s commercial salon. It must be stressed that full commitment is essential for your success, and you will be required to pass online end-of-unit assessment tests by the awarding body, as well as participating in group presentations.

Qualifications

Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing City & Guilds NVQ Level 1 Diploma

  • Personal development skills
  • Study skills
  • Employability skills

Further study and career options

On successful completion of the course you can progress to the Beauty Therapy Level 2; alternatively, you may wish to study Nail Technologies or Hairdressing. Your course tutors and personal tutor will advise and guide you with your progression during your course. Alternatively you could progress onto a Level 2 beauty apprenticeship or an assisting junior therapist role in a salon or spa.

Additional information

To take part in this course you will be required to pay £50 for a uniform and £50 for your personal equipment. You will also need to pay £15 for trips/visits.

Funding information

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses are still free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification.
