Mechanical Engineering BTEC Level 3 Diploma

This course is designed for people who are working in a technical role within the engineering industry and are looking to obtain a vocational qualification to support their position or to progress within their organisation. If you are a trainee or an apprentice, this nationally recognised qualification equips you with the knowledge and understanding you need to develop your career in mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 3 GCSEs at grade C or above in Mathematics, Science and English, OR
  • Level 2 First Diploma in Engineering (Merit or above)

If you are over 21 and do not fully meet the entry criteria then it may be possible to gain entry to the course subject to a successful interview where you will be considered individually on your engineering/industrial experience, knowledge and the ability to demonstrate a sound understanding of mathematics and mechanical engineering principles.

Course content

During the course you can study a range of topics, including:

  • Mathematics for technicians
  • Mechanical principles and applications
  • Electro, pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Engineering drawing for technicians
  • Applications of mechanical systems in engineering
  • Computer-aided draughting
  • Further mathematics for technicians
  • Further mechanical principles and applications
  • Project
  • Communications for technicians
  • Health and safety in engineering

Assessment methods

Assessment is on a continuing basis and will include phase tests, assignments and presentations.

Further study and career options

Successful completion to an appropriate level enables you to progress on to our Mechanical Engineering HNC or similar Level 4 qualifications.

Additional information

During the course, you will be required to attend for one day a week, for a period of two years. Additional study will be required outside of College.

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

Funding information
