Mechanical Engineering BTEC HND (part-time) (top-up from HNC)

This course is designed for people who are already working in a technical role within the engineering industry and are looking to top-up their HNC in Mechanical Engineering to HND. This will be the final year that you can top-up a BTEC (QCF) HNC to a BTEC HND (QCF) due to the qualification being replaced by the awarding body.

Entry requirements

Due to the withdrawal of the QCF style qualification top-up cannot be guaranteed and eligibility must be determined by a review of your current unit achievement prior to any interview taking place. To start this HND you must have successfully completed an HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or General Engineering) that forms part of the BTEC QCF style qualification (unfortunately we are unable to top-up BTEC HNC’s under the RQF framework). Entry is subject to a successful interview.

Course content

The units of study available for top-up under the BTEC HND (QCF) qualification are:

  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Quality Assurance and Management
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Advanced CAD Techniques
  • Heat Transfer and Combustion
  • Managing People in Engineering

Assessment methods

Assessment is on a continual basis and will include a range of assessment methods, such as: time-constrained tests, assignments, practical lab-work, research projects, presentations etc.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of the HND you may have the option to further top-up the qualification to a full Bachelor’s degree at university. Bedford College Group currently runs a BSc in association with University of Northampton.

Additional information

As this is the final year of BTEC HND (QCF) top-up available we can only offer the 6 units listed. Attendance is 1 day (currently Thursday) per week over 1 year. Additional study and reading will be required and expected outside of College.

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.
