Celebrating Tomorrow’s Engineers Week with Bedford College’s Engineering Excellence

To celebrate Tomorrow’s Engineers Week (7-11 November 2016) #TEWeek16 we’re looking back on Bedford College’s distinguished history of training some of the brightest young engineers, how they have helped change the world and how they’re inspiring the next generation.

Tomorrow's Engineers study at Bedford College

Here at College you can specialise in aerospace, electrical & electronic or mechanical engineering; either full-time or as an apprentice. You can even study with us for a full BSc Honours degree in conjunction with The University of Northampton.

We have fully equipped engineering and aerospace workshops, including a real aeroplane and fuselage for students to work on! Talking of planes, did you know that The Great British Bake Off finalist Andrew is an aerospace engineer for Rolls Royce? We’re sure his engineering skills helped him with those great bakes!

Aerospace Engineering at Bedford College

A little closer to home, Managing Director of Siemens’ UK Digital Factory Division, Brian Holliday, studied here in our Engineering department in the 1980’s on day release as an apprentice of the world-renowned Texas Instruments. He now works for the largest engineering company in Europe.

Brian, who recently came back to see us, said: "What I learned here as an apprentice has been useful throughout my career - it was an excellent foundation”. Brian met up with some students to talk about how they would benefit from an apprenticeship or a study and work experience combination.

The department works with many high technology companies such as Lola, Lockheed Martin and Marshall Aerospace. Many of our apprentices work with experts at Cranfield University where they specialise in the areas of aerospace, agrifood, defence, energy and environmental technology with employers such as Coca Cola, SMC at MK and Clarke Energy of Liverpool.

Our Engineering Student of the Year 2016 was Oskar Kutyla who won a cheque for £500, a signed certificate from High Performance Powertrains Managing Director Andy Cowell, a week’s work experience with them and a fast-track towards an apprenticeship assessment at the Formula One powertrain company in Brixworth, Northamptonshire! Well done Oskar!

Airlander Student of the Year

We have lots of guest speakers come in from companies including PA Consulting Group and SMC Pneumatics, as well as Hybrid Air Vehicles to learn about the famous Airlander. The helium-filled airship is the latest in a long history of air flight engineering at nearby Shortstown. Apprentices linked to the industry have studied at Bedford College for decades and today train on the very latest technology.

As a department, we love festive jumpers at Christmas and are also pretty good at celebrity spotting; we met Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis on our Aerospace ‘have a go session’ at The Skills Show, a huge exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham.
