Get involved in Bedford’s Grand Designs with a Construction course at College

Bedfordshire born Kevin McCloud is back on our screens with a new series of Grand Designs! From modern treehouses to a home floating on the Thames, it’s hard not to be inspired by some of these magnificent builds and all this week (19-23 October) at the NEC in Birmingham, Grand Designs Live is bringing ideas and inspiration for your very own grand design!

Construction courses at Bedford College

There’s lots of exciting building work going on here in Bedford too with Bouygues’ Riverside North development, just over the bridge from College, providing a new Premier Inn hotel, Vue cinema, apartments and retail units. Our Construction students have been on various site visits throughout the project and three of our Bricklaying students have secured apprenticeships with locally based contractor GRT to work on the cinema and retail complex.

Offering a wide range of full-time study programmes, part-time courses, degree-level courses and apprenticeships, you can start your journey to becoming a builder, painter and decorator, joiner, project manager or surveyor with us.

The construction industry is going through big changes to incorporate green technologies, and sustainability is embedded within most of our courses as employers demand workers to have skills in this area. Using the latest technology is also important to employers and students now have the opportunity to experience 3D modelling in Revit, as well as AutoCAD for its 2D and 3D drawings. Revit is said to be the future with its ability to produce virtual walkthroughs helping architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, manufacturers and contractors to work together.

As a Construction student you will go on plenty of trips and site visits, plus we have our own Construction mini bus, funded by the Connolly Foundation, to travel in style! Painting & Decorating students have visited the National Painting & Decorating Show at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, Level 2 Carpenters went to Ridgeons Timber processing plant near Bury St Edmunds and Civil Engineering and Carpentry students visited The Thames Barrier to discuss its role in safeguarding the capital from flooding.

You will also be encouraged to enter competitions to ensure that you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. Students on our Sustainable Construction Foundation Degree won a national Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition to gain £150,000 of government funding and undertake a retrofit of Bedfordshire housing. Jack Trowell (Carpentry) and Rhiannon Anesi (Painting & Decorating) produced some really high quality work in an inter-College competition for craft skills winning first and second in their respective competitions.

With 232,000 new jobs expected to be created in the industry over the next five years (www.goconstruct.org) there will be lots of exciting opportunities open to you after College. Former Level 3 student Jake is now a Junior Quantity Surveyor at Innovation On-Site, a position he acquired following an employer event here at College. “I’m involved in pricing carpentry and timber frame works for clients. My employer is also paying for me to study the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying & Construction Commercial Management degree at Nottingham Trent University part-time.”
