Construction BTEC Level 3 Diploma

This course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the sector. The course also offers different choices for emphasis through the selection of specialist units.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable for those in construction employment wishing to achieve a qualification in the field of 'technical and professional'.

You will need:

  • A BTEC First qualification in Construction or a related vocational area, OR
  • An Intermediate NVQ in an appropriate vocational area, OR
  • GCSE equivalent to four passes (including Maths & English) at grade C, OR
  • Experience in the industry, which will be assessed during your interview 

Course content

Over the two years you will study the following six core units:

  • Health, Safety & Welfare in Construction & the Built Environment
  • Mathematics in Construction & the Built Environment
  • Science & Materials in Construction & the Built Environment
  • Construction Technology
  • Construction Design
  • Building Technology in Construction
  • Construction Principles

You will also study six optional units such as:

  • Computer Aided Design (Revit & AutoCAD)
  • Project Management in Construction & the Built Environment
  • Measuring, Estimating & Tendering Processes
  • Land Surveying in Construction & Civil Engineering
  • Setting Out Processes in Construction & Civil Engineering
  • Building Surveying in Construction

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through a variety of methods which include exams, research and assignments, and there will also be some practical elements of assessment.

Further study and career options

Following completion of this course you could progress onto higher level study of HNC/D, Foundation Degree and Degree in related subjects. You could alternatively progress into careers including: architectural technician, employment in surveying practices, housing association trainee surveyor, housing technician.

Additional information

The course benefits from lectures from guest speakers within the industry and site visits to enhance the learning process.

Study for this part-time course is for one full day per week for two years; Fridays in your first year, and Thursdays in your second. You are expected to spend the equivalent number of hours studying privately.

Pay by instalments

The College offers an instalment plan for Further Education and Higher Education courses to students where the total amount payable at the point of enrolment is £200 or more. Within the scheme there is an ability to pay up to 6 instalments, depending on the length of the courses and the final payment must be paid at least a month before the end of the course.

Funding information

If you are aged 19 or over you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan to help you pay the tuition fees for this course.
