Networking Fundamentals

This course will give you an understanding of fundamental networking concepts, including network infrastructures, network hardware, and protocols and services. This Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) course will serve as an introduction to the topic of networking using Microsoft Windows Server 2008. You will also gain an introduction to Microsoft certification, which will be useful if you are looking to enter the IT profession.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you should have a good knowledge of computers and the Windows operating system, as provided by such courses as CompTIA A+ or Cisco IT Essentials.

Course content

Through studying this course you will gain an understanding of network infrastructures, network hardware, and network protocols and services. You will study the following modules:

  • Understanding local area networking
  • Defining networks with the OSI model
  • Understanding wired and wireless networks
  • Understanding internet protocol
  • Implementing TCP/IP in the command line
  • Working with networking services
  • Understanding wide area networks
  • Defining network infrastructures and network security.

Assessment methods

An optional online Microsoft Technology Associate certification test will be available at an extra cost of approximately £45.

Further study and career options

This MTA course will be beneficial if you are interested in pursuing further courses in Microsoft network operating systems, Cisco networking and CompTIA Network+.
