Pre-Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care and Childcare

The pre apprenticeship programme in Care and Early Years will suit you, if you:

  • are interested in becoming an apprentice
  • want to progress into other further or higher education courses, or into new work area
  • are seeking to update and/or add to your employment skills
  • would benefit from alternative approaches to curriculum and learning 
  • need to develop your literacy and/or numeracy skills. 

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a Level 2 qualification in Early Years or Health & Social Care (or equivalent).

Course content

You will need to attend placement in an Early Years or Health & Social Care setting two days a week.

Two further days will be in College where you will study the Level 3 qualification in Progression, plus Functional Skills Maths, English and ICT.

An integral part of the course will be job searching and applying for relevant employment/apprenticeships. Once you find a position you will be able to leave the course at a point throughout the academic year.

You will study a range of units, as follows:

Level 3 Award in Progression: (September to January)

  • Career Planning
  • Work Experience
  • The Principles of Childcare Practice
  • Nutrition and Healthy Eating

Level 3 Certificate in Progression (January to June)

  • Research skills
  • Teamwork skills
  • Developing personal confidence and self-awareness
  • Investigating a career
  • Using Email

You will also study a relevant first aid qualification.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed throughout the course via Functional Skill exams, course work and assessments.

Qualifications

You will gain the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Award in Progression
  • Level 3 Certificate in Progression
  • Plus, relevant Functional Skills qualification

Funding information

On successful completion of this course you can move on to a Level 3 apprenticeship in Care, Early Years or Teaching Assistants, full-time employment in Care/Early years or schools or a full-time Level 3 vocational programme of study in Care, Early Years or Access.
