Education & Childcare Pathway Pre T

This qualification is the best pathway to progress onto a T-Level in Education & Childcare. You will gain relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours in all areas of working with children from birth to primary years. You will have intensive delivery of English or maths to enable you to improve your GCSE grade to meet the criteria for the chosen T Level. Your course will include 150 hours of work placement across different childcare settings and schools, to be able to help you experience and choose your preferred pathway in preparation for the T Level.

Entry requirements

To begin this study programme you will need... 

Duration: 1 year
  • 3 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English or Maths 
  • One of GCSEs in English and maths must be at Grade 4 or above and the other at Grade 3 

Entry will also be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Students will need to have a keen interest in starting a T-level in their chosen industry the following year.

Pre-T prepares students for direct progression to the T level in Education & Childcare – Early Years or Assisting Teaching Pathways. Students must achieve a Grade 4 or above in English and maths to progress onto a T-Level. 

Course content

This qualification covers a range of key subject areas that provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years 11 months old. It has been designed to support learners to progress on to Level 3 qualifications.

Units Included are:

  • Child Development 0-19 (12-19yrs in preparation for Level 3)
  • Play and Learning
  • Exploring Legislation
  • The role of the childcare practitioner
  • Nutrition
  • Physical development and physical activity

To achieve this qualification students must also complete a professional skills record. This includes projects and observations completed in placement.

Students will have to undertake 150 hours of work placement in a variety of childcare settings and primary schools.

Students will also study, paediatric first aid and understanding mental health in early years as part of the pastoral programme.

Students will complete English or Maths GCSE delivery alongside Contextualised English or maths studies.

  • Multiple choice/short answer assessments – internally marked
  • GCSE Exams in English or Maths


  • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings (603/5937/7)
  • NCFE CACHE Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid 603/0752/3
  • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health in the Early Years (603/5862/2)

Further study and career options

Course/Career progression:

Pre-T prepares students for direct progression to the T level in Education & Childcare – Early Years or Assisting Teaching Pathways.

On successful completion of the T Level students can progress to University or seek employment within the Education / Early Years Sectors.

This qualification allows progression onto Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to Childcare, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Trips, visits, enhancement activities and employer/guest speakers – to be arranged. Barclays skills for life as part of the pastoral component.
