Children's Play, Learning and Development BTEC Level 3 Award

This Level 3 course will provide you with an introduction to working in the early years sector. The course is equivalent to one A-Level and is ideal if you are unable to commit to a full-time Level 3 programme.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need GCSE in English at grade D or above, or a Level 2 qualification.

Course content

This course will consist of five units, which will give you an overview on how children develop, how to contribute to children’s play and learning, and how to meet the physical care needs of children. You will also develop your personal and employability skills. 

You will cover a wide range of topics during the course, including:

  • Child development
  • Play in early years settings
  • Meeting children’s physical development
  • Physical care and health needs
  • Collaborating with parents, colleagues and other professional in early years settings.

In addition to the main qualification you will be invited to undertake programmes in both English and maths. You will also be invited to take part in a trip to Africa in 2015 to investigate international perspectives on childcare and education.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including assignments, case studies and one externally assessed unit.

Further study and career options

On successful completion of this course you can extend your studies to convert this qualification into a full Level 3 qualification to enhance your UCAS opportunities. More able learners may be considered for a Foundation Degree in a relevant subject.
