Biomedical Science & Analytical Forensics Advanced (Level 3)

Tresham college forensic science

Overview

Analytical Forensics & Biomedical Science Advanced (Level 3)

A two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements for learners who want to progress to HE courses in the science sector before entering employment. Learners will develop their skills and knowledge within chemistry, biology and physics as well as a chosen specialist topic such as biomedical science or forensic science.

Learners will experience teaching from experts within the field of biomedical and forensic science. By the end of the first year of the course, learners will have developed their skills and confidence within the core sciences, which will earn them a foundation diploma in applied science – this is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels.

Within the second year students will continue developing their core scientific skills, as well as follow their chosen specialist pathway. This upgrades their foundation diploma to an extended diploma, equivalent to 3 A-levels. The course is designed to assess students via coursework and exams which involves practical and theory work. Alongside this, students will conduct work placement and enhancement programmes to strengthen their employability and career applications.

Aleksandra

When I’d finished my GCSEs I wanted to learn more about science because I find it so interesting to see how our body works and how it adapts to our surroundings. Secondary school just gave us the basics, but at College it’s about researching the subject and taking it to the next level. I really enjoy studying chemistry and biology together because it enables me to combine my passion for sport with my scientific knowledge. I’ve played hockey since I was seven and am now a member of the Kettering Hockey Club.

We did one experiment called ‘screaming jelly babies’ where you can see how much energy there is in a sweet by putting it into molten potassium chlorate. The reaction shows the oxidation of the sugar in the jelly baby and causes a screaming noise. I’m very interested in diet and take care of what I’m eating because I’m aware of how it affects our bodies.

I want to study Science at university but also bring sport into my education, perhaps through Sport Science, Biochemistry or even Pharmacology. A career that combines the two would be ideal, such as a Personal Trainer or Laboratory Scientist.

The College offers an independent environment, which is a really nice way to learn and good experience for the future. The course is mainly coursework based, so it’s good if you like being organised and taking control of your own studying, like I do. The tutors are very supportive and help us think about our futures by talking to us independently.
