Safe use of Stump Grinders NPTC Level 2 Award

This course covers the safe operation of stump grinders within a working environment, operator maintenance and pre-work checks and adjustments. You will be able to organise of work areas for safe operation and conversion to transport position. Industry legislation and best practice for preparation will also be covered.

Upon successful completion of this course candidates will receive a City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in the safe use of stump grinders. This qualification is issued for life, however NPTC recommends that refresher training is carried out every three to four years.

As well as being held at the college, this course can be delivered on your own site, using your own equipment ensuring your employees are trained in the environment they are most familiar with and at a time that best suits you (please contact admissions to discuss your requirements).

Entry requirements

There are no other formal entry requirements for this qualification however candidates are strongly advised to ensure that they are up to the standards that will be expected of them when they are assessed. Candidates will be required to supply their own personal protective equipment which should consist of:

  • Forestry helmet
  • Trousers with safety padding
  • Steel toe capped Boots

Course content

  • Produce a site specific risk assessment for stump grinding operations
  • State the principles of HSE legislation and safety guidelines for using a stump grinder
  • Select the appropriate PPE and state the maintenance requirements
  • Carry out operator checks and identify the safety features of a stump grinder
  • Carry out routine operator maintenance
  • Inspect and identify defects on the grinding mechanism. Prepare machine prior to operation, start the machine, carry out safety checks and stop machine
  • Prepare a work area and a range of stumps for grinding and identify hazardous materials not to be ground
  • Use approved techniques for safe and efficient stump grinding of a range of stump sizes. State the procedure for removing blockages
  • Prepare machine for transport and storage.
