Case Study Hybrid Air Vehicles Employer

Bedford based Hybrid Air Vehicles is working on possibly one of the most exciting aviation developments in the world today: the Airlander. This cutting-edge, hybrid aircraft promises to revolutionise commercial air transport and has experienced a massive expansion in staff over the past 18 months to help realise this.

As part of the big recruitment drive, HR Officer Niky Jeffries has been responsible for taking on three new apprentices, two in their Engineering department and one in Business Administration.  Niky said: “I joined in May 2014 when we had 30 members of staff.  We now have 120 people working for us, including our three apprentices.”

Niky contacted Bedford College and arranged to take part in their Apprenticeship event at the Bedford Corn Exchange.  In addition the College advertised the vacancies on their website and to their apprentice database. Niky said: “We had 70 people apply for the engineering apprentice roles, and we short listed a group of 10 who joined us here for an assessment day.  We then selected our final two successful engineering apprentices.”

Niky is delighted that the apprentices have settled into their new roles quickly and have been quick to appreciate that they’re in a unique industry and will play a special part in Bedford’s history.  Niky is also very pleased about the support she has continued to receive from Bedford College since the apprentices have been in place, she said: “From my point of view it’s been very successful.  It’s fantastic having very engaged apprentices on board and the support we’ve had from Bedford College has been brilliant.”
