Eddie the Eagle

Now showing at cinemas is the film about former Bedfordshire mad-cap Olympian, Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards. Against all the odds, Eddie took part in the death-defying ski-jumping sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics, amid the mountains of Calgary

The film shows Michael “Eddie” Edward’s struggle to move on from being a plastering apprentice to high-flyer. And even if he didn’t win a medal, he won the hearts of the crowds at the snow-capped games.

In 2011 Eddie revisited Bedford to update his construction skills at Bedford College and posed with his ski gear for a photo call.

Said Bedford College Principal and CEO Ian Pryce CBE: “Eddie’s career path shows that an apprenticeship can lead on to almost anywhere. And you can always come back to land with us for further training."
