Government announces new Technical Academy for Bedford

Tuesday 30 September 2014

Students aged 13 – 19 years are being offered the chance to fast track to careers requiring technology skills through a new Technical Academy in Bedford Borough.

Proposed by Bedford College, this will be an independently governed school providing a high quality learning experience in science, service and creative technologies, in addition to GCSEs.

The Technical Academy will open in September 2016 taking pupils aged 13 (Year 9) and at 16 (Sixth Form).

Bedford College conducted an extensive consultation locally to demonstrate demand – not only from parents, but from young people who are better switched on to technology than their mums and dads. There was demand for the school from as soon as September 2015 – but in the meantime Bedford College has become sponsors of the Houghton Regis-based 14+ University Technical College and so were allowed an extra year to prepare for launching the Bedford school.
