Friday 28 March 2014

Bedford College students are warming up for some fantastic work experience with the UK’s best pastry chefs at a Hotelympia event.

On April 13th a coach load will be travelling to Excel in London for the biggest culinary show in the UK.

A select few second year students will actually be taking part in the competitions as commis chefs supporting the crème de la crème in the Association of Pastry Chefs (APC) Dessert of The Year Competition.

“It’s a pressurised environment, working against the clock to prepare 4 portions of a fine dining prize-winning dessert in 1 hour 45mins against the best pastry chefs in the country,” explained Andrea Ruff, who is hospitality course manager & chef lecturer at Bedford College and also the Vice Chair of the APC.

The dessert event is just one course in banquet of competitions and displays being held over three days. Bedford College students are privileged to taking part.

“We pride ourselves at Bedford College on preparing our hospitality trainees for the workplace – where the food has to be right first time for the paying customer.”

“They practise here at our Restaurant 25 on the 5th floor of the tower block cooking and serving food to visitors including at our popular Theme Evenings.”

Anyone wanting to sample some outstanding food prepared by the next Jamie Oliver* can visit 25 Restaurant.

EXTRA DISH:  A course for 10-15 year olds starts in April for six consecutive Saturdays from 10am - 2pm.

The Junior Cooks Club will allow the young students to cook a variety of savoury and sweet dishes to give them an all-round experience in a professional kitchen.
