500 IT-skilled and ready for work in MK

Wednesday 9 April 2014

More than 500 people have completed IT training at the Milton Keynes Learning Centre in Silbury Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes.

The Bedford College facility offers introductory, intermediate and advanced  IT training for people of all ages and celebrated its first anniversary with an awards ceremony with Mayor of MK Cllr Brian White.

Cllr White said: “Milton Keynes has businesses looking for skilled staff and it is good to see Bedford College helping to prepare people with technology training.”

Milton Keynes Learning Centre is open from 8am – 8pm Mon – Thurs and Fri 8 am – 6pm – allowing people to train for the required four hours a week around work and family commitments.

Courses cost from as little as £20 or are free for those on certain benefits.

Those who have benefited from training:

Val Kehoe, from Great Linford, was made redundant last year and wanted to improve her job prospects and was directed to the MK Learning Centre by the local Job Centre. She completed ITQ Level 2 in six subjects: Word, Excel, Access, Publishing, PowerPoint and Interview Techniques. As a result she won a short term employment contract which has since ended - so she is looking for another. “Having these qualifications will help me,” said Val.

Margaret Buckley of Emerson Valley was out of work when a London contract came to an end. She heard about the Learning Centre from the Job Centre and “popped along” to find out more. She passed her Level 2 in various qualifications. “The tutors were so helpful. It is a relaxed environment where you can work at your own pace. So when I got a new contract in London I was able to complete my course. It was an extra effort but I wanted to finish what I started. I am now hoping to get another contract in London. It was £20 well spent.”

Maureen and John Normanton decided to study together after hearing about the Learning Centre in Morrison’s supermarket.

Maureen, who has office work experience, hopes her updated IT skills will help her find a part time post. John is in work but has found IT skills are a passion now. His expertise in spreadsheets has been useful for home accounts and helping friends organizing their business finances.
