On the ball with AFC Kempston

Monday 24 June 2013

A winning team deal between Bedford College, Lloyds TSB Commercial Banking and AFC Kempston will keep soccer on target for a decade to come.

The organisation has secured funding for an advanced all-weather pitch at the Hillgrounds site. The college helped make this possible by agreeing a nine-year rental deal at the ground.

A celebration photocall was held at the club with Ian Pryce, Principal and CEO of Bedford College, Club Chairman Alan Kirby, Phil Newman and John Guiney of Bedford College sports department and from Lloyds TSB Commercial Banking: Tracy Edwards and Alan Peachey.

Said Ian Pryce: “Being a football fan I am delighted that Bedford College has been able to help secure this fantastic facility not just for our soccer students, but for the wider community of Kempston.”

Tracy Edwards, senior manager at Lloyds TSB Commercial Banking, said: “It is important for us to support projects like this because sports facilities are vital to the local community. The new football pitch is a great addition to the area and we hope it is enjoyed for many years to come.”

Bedford College football academy students are coached by Kempston Rovers Manager Dave Randall and the best of them go on to play for the AFC.

The Hillgrounds centre is also home to Kempston Town football club and other sporting groups. The clubhouse with bar and decking can be rented for corporate or family events.

Kempston is home to Bedford College in areas other than football. On the Woburn Road Industrial Estate it has the Gas and Plumbing Technology Centre, which was recently visited by an international delegation from India who wanted to see excellence in action. On the same Triumph Way, it has the Vehicle Technology Centre where young people are prepared for careers in the car industry.
