Student profiles
Philip, Aerospace Engineering BTEC National Diploma
“I decided to study aerospace engineering
because my family has always enjoyed an interest in aviation, and
my grandfather is a pilot. I decided to study at Bedford College on
the recommendation of some friends that had also been here.
I really like the course so far and I am
really impressed with the facilities, including the aeroplane in
the workshop. I like my classmates and the lecturers are very
helpful. I am proud as I have done well on my coursework.
I have one year left at Bedford College, and I
plan to become an RAF pilot when I complete my course. The training
will take four or five years but I know it will be worth it because
I will be able to follow in my family’s footsteps.”
Simon, Electrical & Electronic Engineering HNC
“I took a five-year apprenticeship twenty
years ago, and then did an ONC in Engineering at Manchester
University. I was a technician for a few years before my company
sponsored me to take the Electrical & Electronic Engineering
HNC at Bedford College.”
“Very few colleges do this particular course,
and I enrolled with Bedford because not only did it run the course,
but it came highly recommended from some colleagues and newspaper
articles that I had read.
“I like the flexibility of the course. I am on
day release and attend College for one day a week, which fits into
my work pattern with the National Grid. The course is pitched at
different levels depending on your ability and you are able to move
at your own speed.
“The qualification will open up a range of
engineering jobs, right up to management level. I’m currently a
project manager but when I have completed my course I will be a
fully-accredited engineer.”
Andy, Electrical & Electronic Engineering HNC
"I originally decided to come to Bedford
College as it is close to home and it offered the specific training
I needed for my apprenticeship. Since studying at the College I
have been surprised at just how friendly everyone is! The tutors
are really helpful and have real industry knowledge and the whole
atmosphere is really relaxed – completely different to school.
I find my course challenging and there is a
good mix of practical and theory, giving me the knowledge to back
up what I do on a daily basis. I plan to study the HND next year
before moving onto degree level. Eventually I hope to work as a
maintenance or testing engineer."
