“We decided that we would like to start our own painting and decorating business, so we enrolled on the decorative occupations course together two years ago. We had previously tried another college which didn’t suit us, but Sandra had attended Bedford College some time ago and was familiar with the surroundings and the tutor so we decided it was right for us.

We really like the variety of topics that are covered on our course. It’s much more than just painting; you get to learn all of the different decorative techniques, including stencilling and faux finishes. Our tutor is really supportive and easy going. He explains things very well and is always willing to help us out.

We have taken our health and safety exams to enable us to work on site, and we’re really excited about our own business, ‘Pink Ladders’.”

“When I left school I went to work for a year as a labourer. I was lucky enough to be offered the chance to take an apprenticeship in carpentry by my employer.

I chose Bedford College to study carpentry because I already knew of its good reputation within the construction trades. The workshops have all the equipment that you need to learn and my tutors have been really helpful.

I am hoping to continue my studies to the next level. My dream is to move to Australia and begin my own carpentry business.”

"I’ve been an architectural technician for 7 years, but the requirements for designing buildings are changing. New legislation makes sustainability key to all our designs and so this was an area I decided I needed to develop.

I enrolled on the foundation degree in Sustainable Construction course and I have found the course invaluable in showing me how best to implement sustainability. It has also not only explained the new regulations but enabled me to understand the reasons behind the legislation and why the extra work we put in to ensure buildings are sustainable is so important.

As far as I am aware Bedford College is the only college locally to offer this course and I have really enjoyed my time at the College. The tutors are great and offer a kind of personal education, talking to you rather than at you."
