Recreation & social life
Social events & parties
There are parties throughout the year, including in the spring and on Valentine’s Day, but the three major social events are:
- The Freshers' party, where you will meet new and returning students, as well as ex-students who all want you to enjoy yourself and get to know everyone.
- The Christmas Festivities, by which time you will have settled in! This is a chance to celebrate the end of term with your friends and kick off your festive season!
- The Summer Ball, which is a celebration of your all your hard work and achievements over the academic year.
As well as the big events, there are weekly activities and functions in the Tavern Bar. These will give you the opportunity to meet people from other courses, try different things and show off your skills, abilities and ideas outside of class. For Children in Need and Red Nose Day, our students have held parties, a sack race, a quiz, baked cakes and cookies, as well as the usual dressing up, so get thinking about what you could do to top all that! If you are a residential student, you can enjoy pizza and film nights in the common room, trips to the cinema and the golf range, as well as game nights.
If all that isn’t enough to keep you occupied then there are also loads of activities and sports teams that you can join in with. You can try canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, squash, tennis, riding or fishing – to name just a few! Trips are also organised to places like Thorpe Park, the Eden Project and various London attractions. There are too many study tours to name, both in this country and abroad, and there is an annual ski trip if you want to try your hand at snow sports. The more you get involved in, the more fun you will have – and it all helps to boost your confidence, teach you how to express yourself and discover new interests.
If outdoor pursuits are your style, then there are a number of sport activities and teams for you to join. You can experience everything from canoeing to orienteering not to mention various trips out to places of interest. Shuttleworth College students are also encouraged to participate in inter-college sports activities including football, rugby, golf, basketball and cricket.
The Student Association
If organising and teamwork are strengths of yours, then you might like to get involved with the Student Association, where you will be able to help put on events and raise funds for charities. Ballots are held to elect student representatives, so if you’d like to have your say in student activities, put your name forward and get yourself elected!
At Shuttleworth College we listen to our students and welcome your input, so if you happen to have a creative flair or a talent for organisation then the College is happy to hear your views and ideas for future activities. You can participate in an enrichment programme, or join the Student Voice group and have a real say in College life, not to mention having great experience to put on your CV.
There is a lively College social scene linked to the Tavern Bar which is open some evenings during the week and is where regular events such as karaoke and film nights take place. Please note that students under 18 years of age are only permitted to purchase non-alcoholic drinks.
