Apprenticeships FAQ

Who should apply?

Apprenticeships are open to you are working full-time in a job role which relates to the apprenticeship you would like to undertake.

Your employer should be willing to support you throughout your apprenticeship and give you the opportunity to practice the skills you need. You can either find an employer yourself or we can assist you with your search.


The apprenticeships we offer page will provide you with more information about the specific entry requirements for your chosen programme.


What qualifications will I get?

An apprenticeship (Level 2) is equivalent to five good GCSE passes and will enable entry on to an advanced apprenticeship programme (see below). During the course of your apprenticeship you will gain:

  • A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2.
  • A technical certificate, such as BTEC National Diploma or a City & Guilds Progression Award which develops your occupational knowledge.
  • Functional Skills or Key Skills qualification, such as maths, English and Information Technology.

What training will I receive?

As an apprentice, the exact training will depend upon your chosen course. It will involve both work and college-based training. This will include:

On-the-job training

  • Practical skills learning.
  • Health & Safety in the workplace.
  • Valuable hands-on experience.
  • Reality training, enabling you to put your knowledge gained at College into practice.
  • Work and gain experience in your chosen field.

College-based training

  • Health & Safety induction.
  • Skills for assessment.
  • Practical and technical knowledge learning.

What's the cost?

The government cover the full cost of training for 16–18 year olds and can contribute towards costs for those aged 19 and above. Depending on your particular apprenticeship, you may need to purchase study materials or equipment.
