Travel Bursary

Studying full-time? Get a £450 travel bursary

At Bedford College, we don’t want travel costs to be a barrier stopping you from coming to study with us. This bursary is available to students studying a full-time course (Level 3 or below), as long as you...

  • are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2016
  • live more than three miles (driving distance) from the campus you will be studying at
  • have a household income of £30,000 or less
  • are not eligible for financial support for travel from your Local Authority.

Do I qualify? Enter your postcode online...

First choose the location you are studying at. This will launch Google Maps (which will open in a new window so make sure you take a note of Steps 2-3!)

On the left-hand side of the page, enter your postcode in the box marked Circle.
You must now choose 'by car' by selecting the car icon and then select 'Get Directions'.

If your address is three or more miles away from the campus you're studying at you will qualify for our travel bursary.

What does the travel bursary mean for me?

Bedford College students: You will receive a cash payment of £450 a year, paid in 10 monthly instalments of £45 directly to your bank account. This is to be used towards the cost of travelling to and from College.

Shuttleworth College students: Your £450 payment will be used to offset the cost of the Shuttleworth bus service, rather than paid directly to you. You will still need to pay the remaining subsidised rate after the £450 has been deducted: this is £405 if you pay for the whole year up front or £150 per term if you pay termly.

Find out more about getting the bus to Shuttleworth College.

If you are not able to access the Shuttleworth bus service, the £450 travel bursary will be paid directly to you for use towards your preferred mode of transport.

Shuttleworth buses are subsidised for all full-time students aged 16-18, so if you don’t qualify for the bursary, you may still access the Shuttleworth bus service. The cost of this is £640 a year up front or £225 per term.

How do I apply?

The 16-18 Bursaries application forms can be accessed via the 'Financial Support Application Forms' section of the Downloads page.

The Travel Bursary applies for 2016-17 applicants and we cannot confirm what arrangements will be in place in following years.
