The Public Service courses at Bedford College will help you develop the skills, fitness and determination to put yourself ahead of the rest. If you are highly motivated, energetic and dynamic – you'll flourish – specialising towards career paths which include the armed forces, emergency, paramedical or prison services. You'll be working towards nationally recognised qualifications to give you the skills to progress on to further education or careers in the private and public sectors.
Why choose us?
These areas benefit from strong government backing – public services are essential roles without which society would be in crisis. Public services workers have to be fit as the working environment can be physically dangerous. These jobs will call for you to enjoy a challenge, be level-headed and have good communication skills, too.
You will learn the vital skills you will need to get your first job and start a promising career. Many of our students also take the opportunity to gain additional qualifications, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and health for life and drug awareness qualifications.
All of our lecturers have worked in public service roles such as police officers, soldiers, paramedics, and prison officers which gives an extra dimension to lessons and will enable you to draw on their vocational experience.
Study with us and you will have access to a wide range of excellent facilities. Springs is our multi-million pound Sports Centre, home to the College’s highly-esteemed Sport Academy. It features a full sized sports hall, dance studio, a fitness studio with cardiovascular equipment and weights. We are also situated next to the river and various parks which means access to kayaking, orienteering, raftbuilding and other activities.
Trips and visits to complement your studies
As a public services student, you will have opportunities to visit and train with the RAF, Territorial Army and Fire Service. As well as this, you will be able to take exchange trips every year. Recent visits include a trip to the Peak District and to San Benedetto del Tronto, an Adriatic coastal town in Italy where the team undertook the challenge of mountain trekking with the Italian Navy. Our sports students also take a variety of trips to visit sporting venues, including Lilleshall National Sports Centre, York College and the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
