Sustainability Day March 22nd

Cross-curriculum involvement in sustainability is one of the reasons that Bedford College is a national symbol of success and an Outstanding Ofsted establishment.

Green issues are not limited to one person or one department but embedded in the organisation from top to bottom and through all areas of study.

To demonstrate this, a wide range of departments put on exhibits and shows at the Sustainability Day on March 22nd.

These included:

  • A film of a recycled and re-fashioned clothing show
  • A documentary of Bedford - Transition Town
  • Photovoltaic systems demonstration unit
  • A-Z of recycling
  • Water conservation computer game
  • Interactive ‘Recycling in Bedford’ and ‘Saving energy/ Reducing Waste’ card games
  • Solar oven making activity

Exhibits included those by Bedfordshire Climate Change Forum, Riseley Eco House, Shuttleworth College, Bedford Borough Council, Energy Savings Trust and others.

The ‘Make Bedford Green’ poster making competition was sponsored by Wilmott Dixon. The winner will have the opportunity to visit Willmott Dixon’s design studios where they can prepare the poster for printing and produce multiple copies to be used in an environmental awareness campaign.

Local schools were also invited to join in the activities. Prizes were presented by the Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson to pupils from St. Andrews School, who had participated in the Green Box Competition organised by the College’s Centre for the Arts.

Director of Sustainability Esin Esat said: “This is an event which brings to life all the commitment and activity undertaken throughout the College towards sustainability. The day was a big success with participation from many student groups and contribution from many college departments as well as external community, industry and local government organisations. This annual event has been getting bigger and better every year.”

Future Jobs Fund employees Mike Seaman and Mike Russell worked with colleague Richard Impey to make the Sustainability Day a success. The Future Jobs Fund is an initiative to give people six months useful experience in the work place and enable them to gain future employment.
