A Level star student Rochelle nominated for Black Child Academic Achievement Award

Bedford College star student Rochelle Balach at the Black Child Academic Achievement Awards, held in the House of Commons

Bedford College student Rochelle Balach joined a star-studded event at the House of Commons - hosted by Diane Abbott MP.

The VIPs included Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Pirates of the Caribbean actress Naomie Harris and many more.

Rochelle, 19 (pictured above, centre), was nominated for recognition in a competition which applauds the achievements of black students, after her success in her A Levels at Bedford College. Rochelle gained three grade As in English, Psychology and Sociology whilst living on her own, combining study with work.

Pauline Kendall, Assistant Director of the Sixth Form, received an entry form about the awards and entered Rochelle at the last minute - and to their delight she was short-listed and asked to attend the London Schools and Black Child event, which celebrates special achievements.

There is more to come as nominees like Rochelle are going to be invited along to other events in the future - including a visit to CNN news offices.

Pauline said: "We were thrilled for Rochelle to be invited along to this event and will certainly be thinking about entering other students next year."
