Bedford College has been given the Government
go-ahead to offer HE, or degree level learning, places to 125 extra
students from September 2012 - with the hope of the same again for
2013.
This means local people can gain their cap and
gown in a range of subjects by staying local, studying full or
part-time, day or evening and without incurring huge university
fees.
"This is great news and will make degrees more
accessible and affordable for people in Bedfordshire," explained
Bedford College Director for HE Tom Kay,
"Bedford College has worked for many years in
providing HNCs, HNDs and foundation degrees, in association with
universities, now another 125 people will be able to take advantage
of 'staying local'. This is particularly important in the
current economic climate when people want to hang on to jobs they
have, but want to improve their career prospects through HE.
"Increases in university fees, which take
effect from September 2012 for new students, have affected
applications but doing a "degree by degrees" at an FE college
results in the same qualifications, which are recognised by
employers.
"Going to Cambridge University is great for
some people, but you can get a degree and keep your local part-time
job, or cope with child care, by studying here at Bedford
College."
