Our work with Barry Wells Plumbing

Barry Wells Plumbing Plugs the Training Gap

Barry Wells Plumbing and Heating has been established for over 25 years, providing high-quality and reliable plumbing and heating services.  Barry has worked with Bedford College for many years to update his Gafe Safe registration and expand his skills so that he can offer renewable technologies to his customers.

As with all plumbers in the UK, Barry and his staff have to keep up-to-date with the latest changes in technology and ensure that they meet gas safety regulations as, by law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register and to stay on the register they must be regularly assessed.

Gas Safe Services

Barry explained that it’s essential that he keeps up-to-date with the latest changes in the plumbing industry and that his staff are properly trained.  His customers expect high standards of service and regular training ensures that he continues to deliver this. In the last year Barry has taken the Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) Certificate Re-Assessment and Domestic Gas Cooking Appliances (CKR1) Certificate. Barry added:  “It gives our customers confidence that we’re up-to-date with the latest legislation and plumbing techniques”

Giving the green light

With energy bills rising significantly over the last few years, Barry has found that his customers are becoming more and more concerned about being energy efficient and are interested in installing more cost-effective technologies.   Barry turned to Bedford College for his training in renewable technologies as he heard they had won awards in this area and have a new, multi-million pound, high-tech centre.  He said “The College are experts in green technologies and can train people in everything from installing air source heat pumps to rainwater harvesting.”

Apprenticeships add value

Barry firmly believes in giving young people the opportunity to develop strong foundations for a career in plumbing and he has employed twelve apprentices over the last few years, each working with Bedford College to complete their qualifications.  He said: “We’ve got an apprentice at the moment who has already done two years, with another to go.  I was given the chance to complete an apprenticeship many years ago and I feel it’s important to give something back and give youngsters the opportunity to start a good career. The College gives them the fundamentals and then it’s up to us to provide them with the paid work experience.  In fact some of my own apprentices have now gone off and started their own companies.”

Barry added: “I would definitely recommend Bedford College - without a doubt.  I know a lot of the lecturers and I’ve always rated the instructors at the College.  Their knowledge, their experience and the way that they teach the pupils is first class.  This is why I’m always coming back to them each year.”
