Plumbing & Heating City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Diploma (Environmental Pathway)

This course is perfect if you want to work in the mechanical engineering services sector and want to progress as a qualified plumber or heating engineer. You will be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and have the knowledge required to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards. The course is designed to give you a trade qualification for life.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a full Level 2 Plumbing qualification.

Course content

This course will cover elements of health and safety, hot an cold water, domestic central heating, and servicing and maintaining plumbing systems. The following optional pathways are available, giving you the chance to specialise your skills: gas, oil, solid fuel and environmental technologies.

During the course you can study the following units (in addition to the selected pathway):

  • Understand how to organise resources within BSE
  • Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and carry out electrical work on domestic plumbing and heating systems and components
  • Understand and apply domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
  • Install, commission, service and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.

There will also be opportunities to attend trade shows and visit manufacturers.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed via seven online exams, along with four planning assignments (written papers) and 20 College-based practical assessments).

Further study and career options

On completion of this qualification you will be well-equipped to progress into employment; you can also study a range of further qualifications to boost your skills, including:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation of Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems 2399-21
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems 2399-22
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation of Heat Pumps Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits) 2399-31
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits) 2399-32
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation of Water Harvesting and Re-use Systems 2399-41
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Water Harvesting and Re-use Systems 2399-42
  • Level 4 Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering (4467).
