Tap Dance: Improvers

This short course is designed to provide a fun and satisfying way to improve muscle tone, flexibility and co-ordination as well as learning the basics of tap dance technique. The course is an excellent way to keep fit whilst learning the basics of tap dancing.

Course content

Students will learn a style of American theatrical dance using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping.

Common tap steps include:

  • Maxie Ford
  • Time steps
  • Pullbacks
  • Wings
  • Cincinnati
  • The shim sham shimmy

  • Running flaps
  • Running shuffles
  • Sugar
  • The paddle and roll
  • Slap
  • Stomp
  • Running slaps
  • Brushes
  • Scuffs.

There are no formal exams.

There are advanced levels of this course, where learners who enjoyed the course can progress and extend their knowledge.

Additional information

You will need to bring a pair of tap shoes and wear comfortable clothing, e.g. jogging pants and t-shirt.
